12.  “Untitled”   Female Torso Bronze Relief

The two bronze reliefs represent some of the last pieces created by Mr. Fields.  These pieces show an exploration of form quite different from the more stylized work previously done.  The work is focused on a small area of the torso rather than the whole figure and deals with the forms in a naturalistic way.  The emphasis is on the rounded forms of the female torso that curve gently over and around themselves.  The proficient use of the relief technique re-enforces the curvilinear shapes.  The artist compacts the form in these pieces forcing the shapes forward visually even though the depth of the relief is shallow.

13.  “Untitled”   Female Torso

        Bronze Relief

A companion to the last relief piece, this one focuses of the female buttocks.  Again the rounded forms are the dominant ones.  The warmth and sheen of the bronze is used effectively to enhance the sexuality of the forms.  A more classical approach to the figure than Mr. Fields’ earlier works, we unfortunately can only speculate as to where this work was going stylistically.

14.  “Untitled”   Standing Female Figure

        Black Walnut Wood

Mr. Fields nods to classical form again in this sculpture where the contrapposto position creates a strong compositional s-curve to the spine, which continues to draw the viewer’s eye to the head.  The rounded forms, and the dominance of the torso in the figure evoke a primitive fertility figure in contemporary lexicon.

11.   The Frog Cast Bronze

Mr. Fields was a well known sculptor of animals, including the much loved rhino at the Louisville Zoo and the wonderful frog at the Home of the Innocents.  A playful rendition of a frog this piece demonstrates the lighthearted humor injected into some of the work.  That ability to endow animals with personality is one of the things that set Mr. Fields sculpture of animals apart from other artists.
